Presentation
Is postcolonialism still relevant in the 21st century? What is the scope of contemporary postcolonial studies? How does the field confront hegemonic discourses of the colonial and imperial past today, in an era defined by several crises, from geopolitical conflicts and mass migrations to various forms of racial and gender-based discrimination? This collection seeks answers to such questions through essays on underexamined works of postcolonial literature. The collection has four sections in which authors explore narratives of Indigeneity, performance, and resistance by Kiana Davenport, Abroorza A. Yusra, Marion Molteno, Wole Soyinka, and Ola Rotimi; issues of gender, queerness, and the postcolonial body in the works of Akwaeke Emezi, Lueen Conning, and Rawi Hage; questions of memory and trauma across generations in the works of Kamila Shamsie, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Malika Booker; and hybrid narratives and new forms of self-representation as reflected in the works of Yashica Dutt and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
