ELOPE. Vol. 24 No.2 (2027) Graphic Fiction in English Studies.
Deadline for contributions: 30 June 2027.
Edited by: Tomaž Onič and Michelle Gadpaille
Publication presentation
Graphic Novels are the new normal, not only in young adult fiction. Among alternative media, graphic novels (or graphic short fiction) offer a way to reach reluctant readers as well as younger readers in general.
Graphic fiction can be researched from all core disciplines of English Studies. In linguistics, graphic narratives can be seen as multimodal visual–verbal interaction with innovative use of dialogue, typography, and register. As literary texts, they challenge traditional genres, canon, and approaches while blossoming in literary movements such as modernism and postmodernism. From the perspective of translation studies, graphic novels raise both similar and different issues to those of verbal texts, since apart from working with linguistic means, there are also visual ones. Finally, in English didactics, graphic fiction is an effective pedagogical resource that supports literary interpretation, visual literacy, inclusive teaching practices, and learner engagement across educational levels. This special issue aims to bring these perspectives into dialogue, highlighting the graphic novel’s growing significance within contemporary English Studies.
Contributions are invited within these topics (and broader):
- terminology—adapting, updating and/or translating accurate terminology for visual text analysis
- stylistics/semiotics for graphic novels
- diversity and inclusion in graphic fiction
- pedagogical approaches to graphic fiction
- graphic modernism, postmodernism, posthumanism
- graphic memoir, life-writing, biography, autobiography
- narratological issues in graphic fiction
- technical issues—line, colour, font, panel grid
- translations of graphic novels
