{"id":1478,"date":"2016-10-14T11:29:48","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T09:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/?p=1478"},"modified":"2016-10-14T11:32:40","modified_gmt":"2016-10-14T09:32:40","slug":"conference-report-esse-conference-22-26-august-2016-galway-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/blog\/conference-report-esse-conference-22-26-august-2016-galway-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"Conference Report: ESSE 13 Conference, 22-26 August 2016, Galway, Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The 13<sup>th<\/sup> ESSE Conference<\/h1>\n<h2>22-26 August 2016, NUI Galway, Ireland<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Patrick Lonergan and Aoife Leahy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/blog\/esse-13-2016-conference-paper-proposal-deadline-extended-2\/galway2016-logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-511\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-511 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/galway2016-logo.png?resize=134%2C134&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"galway2016-logo\" width=\"134\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>\u00a0We were delighted to host the 13<sup>th<\/sup> ESSE conference at National University of Ireland Galway, Ireland.\u00a0 There were 3 plenary lectures, 17 sub-plenary lectures, 80 seminars, 10 round tables, 5 special PhD sessions and a poster session as well as the ESSE General Assembly and book awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/blog\/conference-report-esse-conference-22-26-august-2016-galway-ireland\/esse-13-photo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1479\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1479 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/esse-13-photo.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"esse-13-photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/esse-13-photo.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essenglish.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/10\/esse-13-photo.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Approximately 800 delegates attended this very busy conference. Special events included the Welcome Reception, a Sean N\u00f3s Song and Dance Performance from The Centre of Irish Studies, readings by the novelist Mike McCormack and the poet Mary O\u2019 Malley, the conference dinner in the Radisson Hotel (including Irish music and dancing performances), three plays by the Fishamble theatre company, and a special closing seminar on women and contemporary theatre from the Druid Theatre Academy. Delegates could enjoy a tour of the library and special collections on any day of the conference and the exhibition \u201cShakespeare Lives through Kenneth Branagh on Stage and Screen\u201d was on display in the library.<\/p>\n<p>Emma Smith, the Cultural Studies plenary speaker, entertained us with \u201cThe Biography of a Book: Shakespeare\u2019s First Folio.\u201d Since the theme of this issue of the <em>ESSE Messenger<\/em> is Shakespeare Lives, Emma Smith has kindly published her lecture. Paul Baker was the Linguistics plenary speaker, delivering a fascinating lecture entitled \u201cDivided by a Common Language? A Comparison of Recent Change in American and British English.\u201d Colm T\u00f3ib\u00edn, the Literature plenary speaker, captivated the audience with \u201cAs Things Fall Apart: The Response to Violence in the Work of W.B. Yeats and James Joyce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liliane Louvel, ESSE\u2019s President, addressed the ESSE membership at the General Assembly. There was applause for Alberto Lazaro and Smiljana Komar, who have been re-elected as ESSE\u2019s Treasurer and ESSE\u2019s Secretary for another three year term.
